Art
Intent
At Shenton Primary School we believe in including children in the process to be as creative as possible in seeking ways of making learning interesting and successful and therefore have chosen CUSP to be incorporated into our art curriculum. The units that are planned using a progressive knowledge and skills based curriculum that culminates in the end of key stage national curriculum outcomes. Our Art curriculum is organised into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D and collage. Developing language and vocabulary is a priority due to Shenton being an EAL school which is supported by our approach and choice of scheme. Our curriculum provides children with both Substantive and Disciplinary knowledge. The curriculum is well organised and progressive from EYFS to Year 6 such as developing painting skills which goes from mark making up to applying painting techniques.
Curriculum Implementation
Children are engaged and enjoy the art curriculum at Shenton and being given the opportunity to become ‘artists’ as they have time in lessons to practice and improve skills taught in each art unit. Children are given a key knowledge note for each lesson which focuses greatly on vocabulary and children successfully manage to refer to this throughout the lesson and use vocabulary correctly. Children are given a balance of practical and explorative learning and the use of new knowledge through strategies and skills taught support learning in the long term. Teachers also plan effectively with children in mind who need additional support and language development at their level.
Impact
Implementing our curriculum focused on the sequencing and content coverage to give children enough opportunity to develop key skills in all areas of art. Retrieval is a large focus at Shenton so developing the vocabulary and giving children plenty of art skills development has supported retrieval greatly.
Class teachers reflect upon the children’s learning to assess their understanding and skills. Assessment for learning informs teachers about future lessons to meet every child’s needs. The subject leader for Art will go through monitoring at termly ‘curriculum review meetings’. Strengths and areas for developments are discussed and reviewed. From this, resourcing, CPD and subject specific development is evaluated and then planned for to further develop art across the school.
The children love creating art and using different materials. We use artists in school to work with the children, to inspire them and introduce them to new techniques. Here is an assortment of artwork created by the pupils across the school.
