Swimming sessions for Year 4

Wednesday 30th August, 2023

Dear Parent/Carers

SWIMMING SESSIONS FOR YEAR 4 (AUTUMN TERM)

At Shenton Primary School, the children in Year 4 will have swimming lessons for the whole academic year.  This will ensure continuity and progression for the children and enable more of them to reach the expected National Curriculum swimming standard.

Swimming will be undertaken in single sex groups.  One group will have their swimming lesson 1:15pm until 1:45pm and the other group will have it 1:45 pm until 2:15pm.

The swimming sessions are funded by the school, however we would like a voluntary contribution towards the cost of the transport.  This year the children will be walking on the dates indicated below, as the weather will be warmer so there will be no transport costs for these dates. We will split the cost of transport costs for when the children are travelling by bus over the 2 terms.  Full payment for this is £42.75 to cover the 19 weeks they are travelling by bus.

The swimming sessions for the Autumn term commence from 6/9/23 and finish on 20/12/23. Parents are requested to make a payment of £20.25 for the Autumn term.

1st Payment 25/10/23 – 20/12/23) - £ 20.25

(Children will be walking for the period of 6/9/23 – 11/10/23 – no cost), and they will be travelling by bus 25/10/23 – 20/12/23 - £20.25

2nd Payment not required till 10/1/24 – 20/03/24 - £ 22.50

(Children will be walking for the period of 10/4/24 – 10/7/24)- no cost) and they will be travelling by bus 10/1/24 – 20/3/24 - £22.50

3rd term – no payment required as they will be walking (10/4/24 – 10/7/24)

In accordance with the 1998 Education Act, there is no obligation to contribute and no child will be excluded from this activity if parents are unwilling or unable to contribute. However, the visit is unlikely to take place if parents are unwilling to support us.  If your child is entitled to Free School Meals, this will be funded by the school.

The Local Education Authority produces Swimming Health and Safety guidance.  Following serious accidents it now advises that no jewellery should be worn for swimming at all.  Therefore any child intending to swim will be asked to remove all jewellery, including pierced earrings, bangles, etc.   This brings us into line with all other city swimming pools.  If for religious reasons you would not want your child to remove an item of jewellery, please come and see the Office to sign a consent form.

Children should bring a towel, plastic bag and suitable swimwear with them for each session. Boys should wear suitably fitting swimming trunks. Girls should wear a suitably fitting swimming costume. Full coverage swimming costumes can be worn. Swimming caps are recommended to cover long hair.

All children are expected to swim as this is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum.  If there is a medical or other reason why your child cannot swim it is your responsibility to contact us so that we can discuss it.

Please complete the reply slip below and bring to the office by Friday 1st September.  Please either pay online via Parentpay or use the payment barcode below at your local paypoint outlet.  The first instalment must be made by Friday 27th September, 2023.

Please note refunds will not be made if your child has forgotten their swimming kit, only for exceptional circumstances will refunds be given at the end of the term. Please do not hesitate to contact the school office should you have any queries.

Yours sincerely
