Shenton Primary School

Empowering and nurturing young minds to achieve excellence

Year 5 & 6

Dear Parents,

This page will give you some ideas of how you can support your Year 5 and Year 6 children.

The Government have cancelled the end of year tests.

In these difficult times, when we are likely to be at home for a lengthy time, it is really important to keep a daily routine for your children. Try and make a timetable for your day, wake up time and routine for breakfast, breaking up the day with times for play through physical exercise, and making sure your children go to bed at a set time. It is also really important to stay positive, say 'well done' or 'that's great' at least 5 times a day to your children. This will help you to manage your and your children's days happily.

If you need any help please email Mrs Cosgrove ( fcosgrove@shenton.leicester.sch.uk ) for further advice.

Competitions and other Activities

Summer Reading Challenge

As you may be aware the Summer Reading Challenge launched last week in public libraries. This year the offer is, unsurprisingly, a digital one considering the current circumstances. The SRC is open to all primary school aged children, is completely free, and with public library membership they can borrow free e-books and e-audiobooks through the library services whilst libraries are closed.

This year’s theme is ‘Silly Squad’ and it’s all about funny books. The website with more information about the SRC, related activities, games and so much more can be found here: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/join-in there are some great resources to use in school as well for those of you that are working in school during this time.

For pupils that are not currently members of the public library service in Leicester, information on how to join during lockdown can be found here: https://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-community/libraries-and-community-centres/libraries/join-a-library/

Leicestershire County Cricket

Leicestershire County Cricket Club are trying to keep as many people, young and old, active and engaged during this difficult period, and so they have created a dedicated area on their website for people to have a go at various activities.

The first of these activities is to design a new t-shirt for the mascot, Charlie Fox. We are encouraging youngsters (aged 16 or below) to design a new shirt and the winning design will be sent to Surridge (our kit suppliers) who will then produce the T-shirt for the mascot to wear. In addition to this we will also be selling replica versions of the shirt in our club shop with all profits being donated to the NHS. Please find the form attached or alternatively visit https://www.leicestershireccc.co.uk/news/2020/march/design-charlie-foxs-t-shirt.html for full details.

There are also several activities for youngsters to complete on our website including home based workouts to keep fit and active and wordsearches and a jigsaw puzzle to complete.  New activities are going to be added at regular intervals. These can be found using the following link https://www.leicestershireccc.co.uk/news/2020/march/junior-foxes-den.html
