Writing & Spelling


The school follows the National Curriculum for Literacy - Reading & Writing. When writing we teach a range of genres which is explained in this curriculum map. Below you will find some information about how you can help your child with Writing & Spelling.



Step 1: Teach your child to write their name using only 1 capital and the rest lower case letters.

            Encourage your child to hold their pencil properly - it is harder to break a bad habit, so help your child get it right now. Click here for some helpful                   advice on how to do this correctly. Also try and teach your child to form the letters correctly, this will help them later when they are learning to use                 joined up handwriting. Your child will naturally                     prefer to use their left or right hand, do not force them to use their right if they are left handed as this can cause problems all the way                       through their school life, and slow their progress down.

Step 2:  Always help your child to see writing as fun. Let them help make a              shopping list, keep a diary or research and write notes about                        something they are interested in e.g. football teams around the                    world, names of animals. Encourage your child to hold their pencil                properly - it is harder to break a bad habit, so help your child get it                right now. Step 3: Only make one correction per sentence e.g. tell your child if they                 have made a spelling or punctuation mistake. If you correct too                   much your child may not want to write.

Step 4: Help your child learn their spellings! Some children like to copy their            spellings out, some like to say the letters aloud, some like to do                  both. Either way they should try and do this from memory, so hide              the word as they try to remember it.Try and find the method your                  child prefers. If your child is finding their spellings too hard or too                easy, please talk to your child's teacher.




Your child should receive the right number of words and difficulty of words that is appropriate to their level. Most children will receive 10 spellings a week, younger children or those with memory difficulties may receive less. If you have any questions please ask your class teacher.


Children learn spellings in different ways. We encourage children to:

Look at the word carefully then read the word.

Cover the word up.

Write and spell the word out loud.

Check they have spelled the word correctly against the original.
